ROOT CANAL & ENDODONTICS

Root Canal Treatment

At Belwell Dental, we know how daunting root canal treatment can seem. So, we pride ourselves on delivering painless experiences for our patients in Sutton Coldfield.

Over the course of two visits, your dentist will remove any decayed tooth tissue and clean the root canals to remove the bacterial infection and place a temporary filling. This will then be left to settle. When you return for your second visit, your dentist will fill the root canals using fine rubber-like points that seal the area and prevent further infections.

Root Canal Treatment

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a procedure used to repair and save a tooth that is infected or damaged.

Your tooth has a bundle of nerves and blood vessels inside it, known as the pulp.  The pulp is the heart of your tooth, keeping it alive and strong enough to function.

When it becomes infected or damaged, rootcanal treatment is the best possible solution to avoid losing your tooth entirely.

The infected or damaged pulp is removed, and the inside of your tooth is cleaned and sealed. Root canal treatment can be done by a dentist or endodontist (a specialist in treating problems with the pulp inside the tooth). The procedure is usually done in one or more visits, depending on the complexity of the case. After the root canal treatment, a crown or filling is usually placed on top of your tooth to protect it and restore it to its full function.

What will root canal treatment feel like?

Before beginning the procedure, your dentist will numb the area around your tooth with a local anaesthetic to ensure that you are comfortable. They will usually place a rubber dam over the tooth to stop water filling up in your mouth. The tooth is cleaned with special instruments, and then filled to seal it from any bacteria.

This could be split over one or two appointments, depending on the complexity.

Why is root canal the best option for an infected or damaged tooth?

  • Pain relief: If you are experiencing pain from an infected or damaged tooth, root canal can provide relief by removing the infected or damaged pulp from inside the tooth.
  • Preservation of the natural tooth: If your tooth is damaged or infected, root canal is the ideal option to avoid losing your tooth.
  • Avoidance of further problems: Root canal can help to prevent the infection from spreading and causing irreparable damage to your tooth.
