UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION
What is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterised by sweating that is significantly in excess of what the body needs for temperature regulation. Unlike normal perspiration triggered by heat or exercise, hyperhidrosis causes uncontrolled, excessive sweating even at rest, in cool conditions, or in the absence of any obvious stimulus.
The condition most commonly affects the underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis), hands, feet, and face, though it can occur across the whole body. It is estimated to affect around 1 in 20 people in the UK yet the majority never seek further advice, often because they are unaware that safe, clinically recognised treatment options exist.
Hyperhidrosis is not caused by poor hygiene and cannot be resolved by standard antiperspirants alone. It is a genuine physiological condition involving overactivity of the sweat glands, and it is widely recognised by healthcare professionals as deserving proper clinical assessment and management.

LIVING WITH HYPERHIDROSIS
How it Affects Daily Life
Do You Know?
“Many people spend years managing symptoms before realising that effective, clinically supervised treatment is available.”
Confidence & self-esteem
Visible sweating can cause significant anxiety and self-consciousness, particularly in social or professional settings. Many patients avoid certain clothing, colours, or social situations entirely.
Work & professional life
Hyperhidrosis frequently affects performance at work — from discomfort shaking hands with clients to worrying about visible sweat marks during presentations or meetings.
Relationships & social life
The condition often leads people to withdraw from social activities, physical contact, or exercise, creating a cycle of avoidance and isolation that compounds the emotional burden.
Physical comfort
Persistent dampness can cause skin irritation, fungal infections, and clothing damage. Many sufferers spend significant time and money on workarounds that provide only partial relief.
THE TREATMENT
How Excessive Sweating is Treated
For patients who have not found adequate relief from prescription-strength antiperspirants or other first-line options, a clinically administered treatment is available that has been used safely for decades in both clinical and aesthetic practice.
The treatment works by temporarily reducing the activity of the sweat glands in the treated area. It does this by interrupting the nerve signals that trigger sweating without affecting the surrounding tissue or the body’s overall ability to regulate temperature through other areas of the skin.
The procedure itself is straightforward and is performed by a qualified healthcare practitioner in a clinical setting. A very fine instrument is used to deliver the treatment to multiple small points across the affected area. The appointment typically takes 20–45 minutes, depending on the area being treated.
Most patients notice a significant reduction in sweating within 2 to 4 weeks of treatment, with results typically lasting between 4 and 12 months. The procedure can be repeated as needed, and many patients find that regular treatment meaningfully transforms their quality of life.

Questions You May Have
At Belwell Dental we offer a clinically administered treatment for Hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) that works at a deeper level reducing the activity of the sweat glands themselves rather than simply blocking the surface of the skin.
Yes. This is a well-established procedure that has been used safely for several decades, both in the treatment of hyperhidrosis and in other areas of clinical practice. At Belwell Dental, it is carried out only by qualified healthcare professionals in a clinical setting.
Most patients find the treatment very well tolerated. A very fine instrument is used to administer the treatment across the underarm area, and any discomfort is typically brief and mild. A topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand if preferred.
The appointment typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes for both underarms combined. This includes a brief pre-treatment assessment and aftercare advice before you leave.
Most patients begin to notice a reduction in sweating within 2–4 weeks of treatment. Full effect is usually reached by the end of the fourth week, at which point the improvement in the underarm area is typically very significant.
Results generally last between 4 and 12 months, with most patients experiencing 6–9 months of meaningful improvement. Individual variation depends on factors including metabolism, lifestyle, and the severity of the original condition. The treatment can be safely repeated when sweating begins to return.
Yes and this is entirely normal and expected. The treatment only affects the specific area where it is administered. The rest of the body’s sweat glands continue to function normally, so your body retains its full ability to regulate temperature. There is no systemic effect.
The treatment is suitable for adults aged 18 and over who experience excessive underarm sweating that has not responded adequately to other management options. A clinical consultation is carried out before any treatment is agreed, to confirm suitability and discuss your medical history.
Most patients achieve a very good result from a single treatment session. A follow-up review is offered to assess the outcome and address any areas where the response may be uneven. Repeat treatments are then carried out as and when required, typically once or twice per year.
Yes. There is no downtime associated with this treatment. You can return to work and most normal daily activities immediately. We do advise avoiding vigorous exercise, excessive heat, and tight-fitting clothing for 24 hours following the procedure to allow the treatment to settle optimally.
